Distillation of essential oils: An innovative technological
The research conducted by Benchabane et al. imposed fixed extraction times (30, 60, 120 and 180 minutes), disregarding the productive extraction duration when the essential oil is effectively being extracted. This means that, if the duration is not long enough to complete the extraction, the economical volume is not reached.
Recent advances in the extraction methods of essential oils and oleoresins from plant materials and its potential applications: A comprehensive review December 2022 DOI: 10.22059/jfabe.2022.347001
Optimization of microwave-assisted hydro-distillation
As the extraction time increased from 20 -25 min, the yield of essential oil increased, and then after, the yield of essential oils start to decrease. This is because, of the longer extraction time, during the extraction processes, degraded oils due to long-time microwave irradiation, leading to a decrease in the oils yield ( Liu et al., 2021 ).
Extraction method Advantages Disadvantages References; Hydrodistillation: No organic solvent needed hence process is cheap and eco-friendly. (i) Long extraction times.(ii) High energy consumption.(iii) Complete extraction is not possible and there may be loss of polar molecules in water.(iv) Due to prolonged exposure to hot water, sensitive constituents of essential oil like esters are partly
Essential Oils: Extraction, Bioactivities, and Their Uses for
Extraction of Essential Oils. Essential oils can be extracted from several plants with different parts by various extraction methods. The manufacturing of essential oils, and the method used for essential oil extraction are normally dependent on botanical material used. State and form of material is another factor used for consideration.
The industrial production of essential oil industry involves plant cultivation and distillation to obtain oil . It creates jobs for rural people for supply of raw materials and workers involved in processing of oils. Essential oils are extensively used globally for fragrances, food flavoring, pharmaceuticals, and aromatherapy .
Review of the rose essential oil extraction
The essential oil was directly measured in the extraction burette, and the quantity (percentage) was determined as the volume (mL) of essential oil per 100 g of fresh flowers. The oil was dehydrated over anhydrous sodium sulphate (Na 2 SO 4 ) and stored in a cold, dark location until further examination.
In recent years, the search for alternatives to the use of synthetic chemical additives in food has led to an increase in research focused on essential oils (EOs). Among the EOs with food applications already described in the literature, the essential oil extracted from basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) stands out, which presents several biological activities. This review was conducted to discuss
Essential Oil Extraction Process | IntechOpen
Essential oils can be extracted using various methods. Process choice significantly impacts yield and quality, leading to the development of processes aiming for maximum essential oil (EO) yields in a chemical state close to their native structure. In this chapter, various extraction techniques, including conventional ones and their intensification, are discussed along with their respective
Growing consumer concern about foodborne disease outbreaks and health risks associated with chemical additives has propelled the usage of essential oils (EOs) as novel food additives, but are limited by instability. In this regard, a series of EOs nano/micro-capsules have been widely used to enhance their stability and improve food quality. However, classical food quality assessment methods
