Energy in Tunisia, Wikipedia
The production rate of crude oil in Tunisia was 35.4 thousand barrels per day in 2022. Downstream sector Refining. The only refinery in the country, managed by the Tunisian Company of Refining Industries, is located in Bizerte.
Refining breaks crude oil down into its various components, which are then selectively reconfigured into new products. Petroleum refineries are complex and expensive industrial facilities. All refineries have three basic steps: Separation. Conversion. Treatment.
List of oil refineries, Wikipedia
The Oil & Gas Journal publishes a worldwide list of refineries annually in a country-by-country tabulation that includes for each refinery: location, crude oil daily processing capacity, and the size of each process unit in the refinery. For some countries, the refinery list is further categorized state-by-state.
A mini refinery is defined as a refinery that produces less than 5,000 barrels of oil a day – however, this is a loosely agreed-upon definition. Mini refinery designs can vary, particularly if they are of a modular construction. Modular-mini refineries are intended to be easy-to-construct refineries that can be customised for consumer demands.
Oil refinery, Wikipedia
Oil refinery. An oil refinery or petroleum refinery is an industrial process plant where petroleum (crude oil) is transformed and refined into products such as gasoline (petrol), diesel fuel, asphalt base, fuel oils, heating oil, kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas and petroleum naphtha.
The average processing gain at U.S. refineries was about 6.3% in 2022. In 2022, U.S. refineries produced an average of about 45 gallons of refined products for every 42-gallon barrel of crude oil they refined. Click to enlarge. Click to enlarge. 2.2: The process of crude oil refining, Engineering LibreTexts
The first process is known as distillation. In this process, crude oil is heated and fed into a distillation column. A schematic of the distillation column is shown in Figure 2.2 F i g u r e 2.2. As the temperature of the crude oil in the distillation column rises, the crude oil separates itself into different components, called “fractions.”.
Here we show the global refining carbon intensity at country level and crude level are 13.9–62.1 kg of CO 2 -equivalent (CO 2 e) per barrel and 10.1–72.1 kgCO 2 e per barrel, respectively

A petroleum refinery is a set of installations intended to transform crude oil, generally unusable as such, into petroleum products: motor gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel, fuel oil, lubricants, liquefied petroleum gases, naphtha, and so on. The products consumed in largest volumes are motor gasoline, motor diesel, and heavy fuel oil.
The crude oil refinery is carried out in three main steps. In the first step, the oil is separated into the various hydrocarbon components in a process called distillation. The second step transforms the products from the first step into other products that are commercially more useful. This step is called conversion.
