In this technology, the cell tissue of rice bran is hydrolyzed with protease and then oil is released to achieve the purpose of oil extraction (Hanmoungjai et al. 2001 ). In a previous study, Chen ( 2014) used alkaline protease to extract oil from rice bran and determined the optimal process parameters.
The steps that occur in a typical rice bran oil refining process, along with the by-products generated are given in Fig. 14.1. Generally, the first step in the refining process with crude rice bran oil is dewaxing or winterizing, although for other vegetable oils the dewaxing step can be done at different times in the refining process.

1. Hydration Degumming The key of the physical refining of rice bran oil is to remove the colloidal substance in the oil as much as possible. The colloidal substance not only affects the quality of the product, but also forms the grease stain on the surface of the packing under the action of high temperature, which affects the normal operation of the equipment.

1. Introduction. Rice bran is a byproduct of the rice milling industry obtained from milling of brown rice to produce white rice. It contains 15%–20% of oil. Apart from oil, rice bran is a promising source for proteins, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, vitamins, tocopherol, γ-oryzanol, and phospholipids (Tao, 1989; Houston, 1972; Saunders, 1986).
Environmental problems caused by the food processing industry have always been one of the concerns for the public. Herein, for the first time, a gate-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) was employed to evaluate the environmental impact of rice bran oil production. Four subsystems, namely, transportation of the raw rice bran to oil factory, crude oil extraction, oil refining, and oil storage
