Extraction of Peppermint Essential Oils and Lipophilic
Extraction was performed with at least 15 exchanges of extract which lasted ~6 h. After the extraction, the residual solvent was removed under vacuum and obtained peppermint extract was further dried at 40 °C for 24 h. Solvent-free extracts (SOX-HEX and SOX-MeCl) were transferred in glass vials stored at −18 °C prior to further use.
The main difference between peppermint oil and extract is the concentration. Plant extracts are diluted with alcohol and other liquid ingredients, so they are less potent. Oils are not diluted, making them far more concentrated. Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that may have potential benefits.
Review on essential oil extraction from aromatic
Various studies have been carried out on the methods of oil extraction from aromatic and medicinal plants. Afzal et al. developed a hybrid solar distillery to extract oil from peppermint leaves and eucalyptus. A secondary biomass system was also attached to meet energy demand during rainy season and night hours (Afzal et al., 2017).
The power output affects the rate of extraction of essential oil from the peppermint plant. The extraction rate of essential oil increased with an increase in the power output.
