President Akufo-Addo commissions Ghana's first private
GNA. Tema, Jan. 26, GNA- President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Friday commissioned Ghana’s first private oil refinery built by the Sentuo Group, Ghana, a Chinese conglomerate, at the Tema Industrial Area, near Accra. The two-million-dollar Sentuo Oil Refinery has an initial processing capacity of 40,000 barrels per day, scalable to 100,000
As a small and open economy, Ghana is often vulnerable to oil price shocks in the event of any significant price fluctuations. As of October 2021, the crude oil production capacity in Ghana stood at 174,000 barrels per day while TOR imported 201,000 barrels per day in the same year (April 2021).
A Perspective on Salvaging Ghana's Tema Oil Refinery: The
The Tema Oil Refinery (henceforth, TOR) has a capacity of 45,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd) and continues to be a significant crude oil refinery in Ghana ( Adam, 2014; Amponsah & Opei, 2014 ). However, the operations of TOR have been inconsistent, in part because of the age of the equipment and mechanical inefficiency.
The refinery covers a total area of 440,000 square meters. It is linked to an oil jetty at the Port of Tema by pipelines of various diameters for the transportation of crude oil and refined petroleum products. TOR's refining plant was designed in 1963 as a Hydro-skimming plant with an initial capacity of 28,000 barrels per stream day.

Constructed by the Sentuo Group Ghana, a Chinese conglomerate at the Tema Industrial Area, the first phase of the new refinery is anticipated to process an initial capacity of 40,000 barrels per day and then scale up to 100,000 barrels per day by the end of the year.
We live in a world charged with the industrialization of energy. Ghana became an oil exporter with the development of the Jubilee Field in 2010, but prior to that, Tema Oil Refinery (henceforth

Tema Oil Refinery – Ghana's Premier Oil Refinery
Though we face challenges, Tema Oil Refinery has undergone a remarkable transformation from a simple hydroskimming plant of 28,000bpsd to 45,000bpsd and has a rich history spanning crude oil sourcing, refining, marketing of quality petroleum products and exporting.
This refinery stands as a good example of our “Ghana made” (Made-In-Ghana) initiative, where we prioritise local production for the benefit of Ghanaians,” he emphasized. President Akufo-Addo explains further that, the project highlights the significant role of the petroleum industry in the country’s economic development.
