A Review on the Fundamentals of Palm Oil Fractionation
It involves the separation of low and high melting triacylglycerol under controlled cooling conditions into olein and stearin fractions with distinct chemical and physical properties. Amongst the other vegetable oils, palm oil is one of the most fractionated oils in the past few decades mainly attributed to its semisolid properties.
The process begins with heating crude palm oil (CPO) to a specific temperature, typically around 70-75°C (158-167°F). This heating reduces the viscosity of the oil, making it more fluid and easier to work with. Crystallization: After heating, the CPO is gradually cooled down under controlled conditions.
Palm Oil and Palm Kernel Oil Refining and Fractionation
Crude, degummed bleached, or fully refined palm kernel oils can be processed with this technology ( Calliauw et al., 2005) ( Table 12-M ). The saturated fatty acid content is increased from ∼80% in the palm kernel oil to 93–96% in the palm kernel stearins; the lauric and myristic fatty acid contents go up to 80%.
Palm olein is a resulting liquid fraction from fractionation of palm oil with a relatively high oleic acid content of about 41.5–47.7 % and is more cost-effective compared to commercial oleic acid as a high proportion of palm olein can be obtained in one single step of fractionation (Derawi et al., 2014; Gibon, 2012; Tarmizi and Ismail, 2008).
Everything You Need to Know About Palm Oil Refinery Process
The refining process of palm oil includes the following: Bleaching. Deodorisation. Fractionation. The crude oil is refined using two methods, including physical refining and chemical refining, during which FFA is removed to ensure that the FFA content is not more than 0.1 %. It is essential to note that physical refining is environment-friendly
In an effort to improve the sustainability of palm oil production, a recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Forests and Global Change experimentally tested whether oil palm plantations could still produce a high yield while reducing the intensity of farming—that is, while using less fertilizer and replacing herbicides used to
Future prospects for palm oil refining and modifications
golden palm oil, red palm oil, white soaps… Optimization of the deodorization technology and process conditions for a maximal retention of natural characteristics without affecting the quality of the refined palm oil is an important challenge. The physical refining can offer important advan-tages like higher oil yield, reduction of the
Let's say a palm oil plantation produces 1000 tons of palm oil on 500 hectares of land. The calculation for palm oil yield KPI would be: (1000 / 500) x 100 = 200. Tips and Tricks of the KPI. Regularly track and analyze KPIs to identify areas of improvement. Set realistic targets based on industry benchmarks and company objectives.
high oil yield palm oil processing plant Tunisia
Yield gaps in oil palm: A quantitative review. Oil palm, currently the world’s main vegetable oil crop, is characterised by a large productivity and a long life span (≥25 years). Peak oil yields of 12 t ha −1 yr −1 have been achieved in small plantations, and maximum theoretical yields as calculated with
All these processes lead to specific products of different quality with different yield and operating costs. The physical and chemical characteristics as well as the triglyceride compositions by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) of palm oil fractions from these industrial fractionation processes are given.
