Makerere & Partners to Develop Soybean Value Chain in Uganda
He pointed out that these soybean support soybean industry in Uganda, where 94% of the Ugandan farmers grow Makerere University varieties. Prof. Tukamuhabwa noted the importance of public-private partnership as well as other partnerships to develop the value-chain of this ‘wonder crop’. “We are excited about the partnership with UNDP.
Production of high quality meal and crude oil is the main objective in soybean processing, and thorough knowledge of the technical system and disciplined operation are required. Vegetable oils are the most important source of fat in the human diet. Derived from an array of vegetable sources, oils are extracted and processed for a variety of food uses. In the demanding and competitive edible

in soybean processing should enhance further national soybean production. Additional support to other components such as mass education and promotion of utilisation of soybean products at household level are equally important. Early soybean research in Uganda started in the 1930s and resulted in the release of the varieties
The current demand for animal feed in Uganda is estimated at 420,000 MT and the annual production by commercial feed millers is estimated at 275,750 MT. With soy meal making up 25% of a quality animal feed mix, it is the most important protein source used in compound feeds. The local demand for vegetable oil stands currently at 410,000 MT.

Soybean yields in Uganda have more than tripled since the end of World War II according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Today the crop contributes about $45 million to the nation’s economy. Processing facilities have been built to turn raw soybeans into soybean oil, soy cake, livestock feed and other products.
Soybean Processing Basics: Operations, NOPA
NOPA members produce meal and oil from oilseeds through a solvent extraction process, employing modern technologies to meet food safety and federal permitting requirements and ensure worker safety. Below is a standard flow chart that illustrates the various stages of a soybean as it journeys through a processing plant to become meal and oil. View […]
Soybean Oil (SBO) is the major edible oil used in the United States for producing salad dressings, baking and frying fats, margarines, and salad and cooking oils. Refined SBO is composed of approximately 98% triglycerides, less than 1% free fatty acids, and less than 1% unsaponifiables.
Soybean Oil Processing Byproducts and Their Utilization
Refining of soybean oil, to make a neutral, bland-flavored, and light-colored oil, results in several by-products. The by-products consist of various mixtures of phosphatides, unsaponifiables, glycerides, free fatty acids, and soap. Lecithin contains mostly hydratable phosphatides, together with some free fatty acids and neutral oil (glycerides).
The soybean oil supply to the neutralization or caustic refining process can be crude oil, crude degummed soybean oil, or a mixture. The long-mix caustic refining system is recommended for soybean oil, as discussed in Chapter 11 and depicted in Fig. 11.2. Proper employment of a long-mix system will give minimum contents of phosphatides
