Past, Present and Future Perspectives on Groundnut Breeding in Burkina Faso
Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a major food and cash crop in Burkina Faso. Due to the growing demand for raw oilseeds, there is an increasing interest in groundnut production from traditional rain-fed areas to irrigated environments. However, despite implementation of many initiatives in the past to increase groundnut productivity and production, the groundnut industry still struggles to
This review traces progress in the groundnut breeding that started in Burkina Faso before the country’s political independence in 1960 through to present times. Up to the 1980s, groundnut improvement was led by international research institutions such as IRHO (Institute of Oils and Oleaginous Research) and ICRISAT (International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics).

SOFIVAR (created in 1985 and closed in 1997) was a public institution dedicated to financing groundnut production (gave seeds, fertilizers, mechanization tools, credits to farmers) and marketing (bought the production of the farmers and gave it to factories to process groundnut into pastes and oil) in Burkina Faso.

Approach to overcome problems encountered in resistance breeding are discussed, with particular reference to foliar fungal diseases, aflatoxins, viruses, bacterial wilt, insects, drought, shade and acid soils, and progress in breeding for confectionery requirements
Past, present and future perspectives on groundnut breeding in Burkina Faso
Groundnut was the top cash crop in Burkina Faso before cotton until 1977 [70]. Since then, groundnut production has primarily served domestic needs as a food crop [36,70]. Of the yearly production of more than 350,000 tonnes [18], only about 2% on average is exported [70], and this to other countries in West Africa [4].
This study aimed to understand the social environment of groundnut production in Burkina Faso. The prospecting was carried out in three regions of Burkina Faso, namely the Central-East, the

Agronomy 2020, 10, 704 2 of 22 (1685.6 kg/ha) [4]. Burkina Faso (formerly known as Upper Volta) contributes 1%–1.5% to the global groundnut production with approximately 400,000 tons per year [4].
In Burkina Faso, national production of Bambara groundnut was increased from 2007 to 2020 (22]). The lowest production was recorded at 37605 t in 2007 and the highest at 74647 t in 2020. A lack of technology support limits the productivity of Bambara groundnut in the smallholders farming with mean of yields of 941 kg ha-1 ([23]).
