Impact and attrition methods in addition to the engineering properties of melon seeds were employed in designing and testing a melon seed shelling machine with a moisture content of 16.47% and an impeller speed range of 1400 – 1800 rpm [30]. At optimum speed (1000 rpm), 12% and 1% seed breakage were achieved for the impact and attrition

Extraction. The Kalahari melon is a trailing herb of up to 10 m (33 ft) long with broad leaves and yellow flowers. The fruit, which varies in size and colour, contains smooth compressed seeds of a black or yellowish white colour. To extract oil from the seeds, the seeds are dried to reduce the water contents.
The seeds are sundried and stored for production and our seedbank for planting in the next season. The oil is extracted via cold pressing of the seeds. Our Kalahari Melon Seed Oil is a pure oil containing 70% linoleic acid was produced consistently. (See our specification and the typical analysis of Organic or Conventional Kalahari Melon Seed Oil)
Physicochemical properties of Kalahari melon seed oil
The melting point of the oils extracted was in the range of −18.7 °C to −17.5 °C and no significant (P > 0.05) difference between the oil obtained from solvent and aqueous-enzymatic extractions was observed. Enzyme-extracted oil tended to be light-coloured and more yellow in colour compared with solvent-extracted oil.
The existing mechanical oil extractors cannot be used to extract egusi oil due to the atypical size and shape of the seed kernels. So, researchers have designed, fabricated, and evaluated the performance of a melon oil extractor (motorised) to eliminate the problems and inefficiency linked to the extraction of oil from egusi melon seeds .
