Technologies for extraction of oil from oilseeds and other plant sources in retrospect and prospects
The vegetable oils are obtained from the oilseeds and also from other oil bearing parts of plants like fruits (mesocarp and/or stones), tubers, germs, sprouts, and so on. A host of methods are employed to obtain the oil from different matrices and each method has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.
As the effects of climate change continue to alter crop-growing conditions year-to-year on both prime and marginal agricultural landscapes, we must consider the effects not only on yield but also on quality. This is particularly true for oilseed crops. In this review, we explore the importance of oilseeds in general and the specific uses of major oilseed crops including soybean, sunflower

Biosynthesis of seed oil and breeding for improved oil quality of rapeseed. In Brassica Crops and Wild Allies. Biology and Breeding (ed. Tsunoda , S. , Hinata , K. and Gomez-Campo , C. ), pp. 253 – 278 .
In this chapter, annual oil crop and oilseed production, export and import information, and their contributions to the world economy are presented, especially in the last 5 years. With the new biotechnological methods, it is aimed to improve oil crop varieties and increase yields by transferring the desired features to crops.
Biotechnology tools and applications for development of oilseed crops with healthy vegetable oils
Plant-derived oils are a major agricultural product that exist in both ubiquitous forms such as common vegetable oils and in specialized forms such as castor oil and coconut oil. These specialized oils are the result of lineage-specific metabolic pathways that create oils rich in unusual fatty acids.
In order to enhance the yield of oilseed crops, numerous elements on which yield is comprises, need to be increased such as concentration of oil per seed, seed size, or number of seeds per plant (Bhat, 2010). Owing to restricted input nowadays, more attention needs to be given on productivity (i. e. yield per unit area, time and input) along

Nervonic acid has only been found in the seed oils of a few known plants, and among these, only Lunaria annua has been considered as a niche crop for future development. However, this plant is a biennial with highly variable seed yields (800–2,000 kg/ha) and has a major problem of seed shattering, making it an uneconomical source of nervonic acid ( Mastebroek and Marvin, 2000 ).
Oilseed rape, or canola (Brassica napus ssp. napus; genome AACC, 2n = 38) is today the world’s third-leading source of both vegetable oil and oil extraction meal. Total world consumption of vegetable oil amounts to approx. 97 million metric tons (2003), of which 27.9 Mt is soybean oil, 27.8 Mt palm oil, 12.1 Mt rapeseed oil, 8.0 Mt sunflower oil, 5.8 Mt peanut oil, and 4.9 Mt cottonseed oil.

Primarily cultivated for the oil present in their seeds, major oilseed crops include rapeseed (Brassica napus L.), soybeans (Glycine max), and peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.). Given the growing global demand for vegetable oils and the high agronomic value of these plants, oilseed crops have been planted at increasingly high levels throughout the world.
Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) is the most extensively cultivated oil crop and the fourth main crop in China after rice, wheat, and maize 1.China is the second largest rapeseed producer after Canada
