Although Cameroon, the largest palm oil producer in Central Africa, produced more than 450,000 tons in 2020, it still imports about 60,000 tons a year to meet its domestic demand. Most of the imported palm oil comes from Indonesia, Malaysia and Gabon.
With this increase in production, has come a growing concern over the sustainability of oil palm cultivation and effects of palm oil production on local populations. In response to these concerns, a group of leading stakeholders and NGOs formed the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in 2004 to provide a model for responsible oil palm plantation management.
