Cold pressed Cucumis melo L. seed oil
It showed that “Ananas” cold pressed Cucumis melo seed oil exhibited an IC 50 of 52.5 μg/g. Moreover, Azhari et al. (2014) reported antioxidant activity in Seinat ( Cucumis melo var. “tibish”) seed oil higher than that found by Rezig et al. (2019), with an IC 50 of 25.2 mg/mL.
The Asteraceae family is economically very important, because many of these plants are grown mainly for their food value, such as lettuce (Lactuca), chicory (Cichorium), and sunflower (Heliantus aminus). One of the typical properties of this family, which includes milk thistle (Sylibum marianum …
Tunisian Milk Thistle: An Investigation of the Chemical Composition and the Characterization of Its Cold-Pressed Seed Oils
In this study, milk thistle seeds growing in different areas in Tunisia were cold pressed and the extracted oils were examined for their chemical and antioxidant properties. The major fatty acids were linoleic acid (C18:2) (57.0%, 60.0%, and 60.3% for the milk thistle
Furthermore, the ‘Crimson’ watermelon seeds witnessed the highest fiber content (48.26 ± 5.26%). The chemical composition of cold pressed seed oils was investigated. Linoleic acid (C18:2) was the main fatty acid in the seed oil fractions, followed by oleic (C18
Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Potentials of Seed Oil from
Infection of skin injuries by pathogenic microbial strains is generally associated if not treated with a lasting wound bed oxidative stress status, a delay in healing process, and even wound chronicity with several human health complications. The aim of the current study was to explore the antioxida …
2.1. Safflower Crude Edible Seed Oil Extraction Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) seeds were harvested in June 2017 from flower heads of plants grown in the northwest of Tunisia. The seeds were then sieved manually in order to clean them from impurities and dust.
Cold pressed Citrullus lanatus seed oil
The Tunisian cold pressed “Crimson” Citrullus lanatus seed oil variety exhibited an iodine value of 135.3 gI 2 /100 g oil (Rezig et al., 2019). This value was higher than those reported by Al-Khalifa (1996) and Mokwala and Shai (2017) for the Egyptian, Iranian, and Chinese Citrullus lanatus and sweet, bitter, and weedy Citrullus lanatus Thumb (Matsum and Nakai) seed oil varieties.
Cold-pressed oils contain phenols present in the seed, and they may have the potential for applications in the promotion of health and prevention of oxidative damages caused by radicals. Factors influencing the antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds include position and number of hydroxyl groups, polarity, solubility and stability of phenolic compounds during processing ( Decker 1998 ).
Vitamin E (α-, β + γ- and δ-tocopherol) levels in plant oils
When the highest total tocopherol levels were taken into consideration, the first five plant oils were pomegranate seeds, wheat germ, fig seed, hippophae rhamnoides and corn oils. Moreover, the wheat germ, fig seed, safflower, sunflower and hazelnut oils had highest α-tocopherol concentration in the oils analysed.
This chapter aims to describe the sources, properties and recovery of seed oils mainly focusing on their chemical composition, physicochemical characteristics, nutritional quality and health-promoting properties. Seed oils provide many benefits to health such as the improvement of general health being, prevention of hyperlipidemia
