The History of the Soybean

As in Europe, soy sauce reached the English Colonies in the New World prior to the introduction of soybean seed (New York Gazette, 1750). In 1765, Samuel Bowen introduced Chinese vetches (soybean) into the Colony of Georgia. He obtained the soybean seed in China ( Hymowitz & Harlan, 1983 ).

Planting the future. In 2017, two years after first meeting Maredia and Wang, Tukamuhabwa was finally able to begin growing the genetically modified soybeans in a greenhouse at the Makerere University Agricultural Research Institute. Developed for cultivation in Michigan, the crops would mature much too quickly if planted in Uganda’s climate.
