Production of biofuels in Mozambique ‘something to forget’
Mozambique’s government created a scheme to encourage the planting of the crop for biodiesel production, as a means to reduce the dependency on foreign imports of fossil fuels. Jatropha can be grown throughout Mozambique. At that time, the cost of oil was so high it made economic sense to produce liquid fuels from other sources.
Biodiesel production has developed rapidly over the last 15 years, especially due to government incentives ( Severo et al., 2019 ). Between 2005 and 2015, global biodiesel production increased 700%, from 3.9 to 30.1 billion liters, reaching 47.4 billion liters in 2019 ( Naylor and Higgins, 2018, REN21, 2020 ).
Biodiesel separation and purification: A review
3.1. Biodiesel purification. The main objective of biodiesel washing is to remove free glycerol, soap, excess alcohol, and residual catalyst. The drying of alkyl ester is needed to achieve the stringent limits of biodiesel specification on the amount of water content in the purified biodiesel product.
Refining of crude biodiesel alone accounts for 60–80% of the total processing cost [28]. Furthermore, dry washing technique (ion exchange resins and magnesol powder) was introduced to substitute water washing to remove biodiesel contaminants. This technique is also employed in commercial plants to purify biodiesel [29].
Palm fatty acid distillate biodiesel: Next-generation ..., AOCS
However, during the refining of palm oil, a lower-value by-product known as palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) is generated in the fatty acid stripping and deodorization stages. PFAD is potentially a valuable, low-cost feedstock for the production of biodiesel. It also makes the much-debated “food vs. fuel” argument a non-issue as PFAD is
Traditional FAAE refining strategies are often energy-intensive, requiring large amounts of water (e.g., wet washing), adsorbents, and/or chemicals. Refining, in turn, produces substantial amounts
Seymour Biodiesel Refinery and Biodiesel Production Plant
Two companies at the forefront of this market are Benefuel Inc of Chicago and Seymour Biofuels, based in Indiana. In October 2007 the two companies announced definite plans to construct a new biodiesel refinery in Seymour, Indiana to convert waste fats and oils into a quality biodiesel product. The new plant, which is due to open in late 2008
2.2. Biodiesel production by two-step esterification–transesterification. Biodiesel was produced from the waste oil of UABE from the palm oil refining plant at Oleen Co., Ltd., by a two-step transesterification method. In this, pre-treatment acid esterification followed by base-transesterification reactions were employed for biodiesel
Biodiesel production from non-edible plant oils, Ayhan
Biodiesel production accounted for 25.6% of the global demand for rapeseed oil, 16.1% of the global soybean oil demand, and 5.9% of global palm oil demand in 2012. On the other hand, extensive use of edible vegetable oils may cause other significant problems such as starvation in developing countries.
FAME biodiesel pretreatment systems. Driven by sustainability concerns, the demand for biofuels from plant and animal fats and oils increases every year. Effective pre-treatment systems are critical for ensuring reliable production of biofuels. Alfa Laval is a leading partner to biofuel producers all around the world, and has decades of
