Cashew nut shell (CNS) contains a dark brown viscous oil called cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), located in the honeycomb structure found between the shell (Nyirenda et al., 2021). CNSL mainly compose of unsaturated long chain m-substituted phenolic compounds including anacardic acid, cardanol, cardol and 2-methyl cardol ( Sharma et al., 2020 ), structures of them are shown in Fig. 1 .
It is the pericarp fluid of the cashew nut and is referred to as Cashew nut shell liquid. According to Patel et al. ( 2011 ), CNSL is extracted using a variety of techniques, including open pan roasting, drum roasting, hot oil roasting, cold extrusion, etc. False fruits and cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) are the secondary products of the cashew plant, while cashew nuts are its primary product.

CNSL (. Figure 1. (c)) is a dark brown viscose liquid containing a mixture of phenolic lipids, that is obtained from the spongy mesocarp of cashew nutshell ( 5 ). This cashew nutshell (. Figure 1. (d)) is of low commercial value, but with relatively high technological significance due to its phenolic constitution.
The liquid is extracted from the nutshell and can be further purified to several chemical constituents such as anacardic acid, cardanol, cardol, and 2-methyl cardol. The composition of CNSL varies depending on the mode of extraction, thus, it is necessary that researchers interested in this resource as starting material for their reactions be fully knowledgeable of the methods of extraction.
Cashew Nut Shell Liquid: A Promising Green Fuel
Definition. CNSL is a dark reddish-brown oil present in the pericarp of the cashew nut. Cardol, cardanol, and anacardic acid present in CNSL accounts for its high phenolic content and diverse applications as a renewable versatile product, especially as a green fuel in terms of its energy content.
Generally, cashew denotes cashew tree, cashew fruit, and cashew nut (Fig. 1) (Blazdell, 2000). The cashew tree ( Anacardium occidentale L.) belongs to the Anacardiaceae family ( Taiwo, 2015 ). Alongside cashew, mango ( Mangifera indica L.) along with pistachio ( Pistacia vera L.) are well-known members of the family with considerable economic value in the global market ( Mitchell et al., 2022 ).

The most widely used technique for the synthesis of biodiesel from non-edible oil, such as cashew nut shell liquid as well as animal fats, is transesterification (Abdul Hakim Shaah et al., 2021). In the transesterification reaction, reactants—oil triglycerides and alcohol—are reacted in the presence of a catalyst ( Fig. 7 ) ( José et al., 2020 ; Sundaramahalingam et al., 2021 ).
