Local preferences for three indigenous oil-seed plants
Background Carapa procera, Lophira lanceolata, and Pentadesma butyracea are three underutilized but increasingly threatened indigenous oil-seed tree species (IOS) in tropical Africa. Because local knowledge is vital for sustainable management, this study investigated the socio-economic factors that explain local people’s (i) preferences for these IOS, (ii) attitudes toward their conservation
All three species are multi-purpose trees with a high potential for seed oil extraction. Seeds of these species have a high content of oil, the therapeutic and cosmetic virtues of which are well documented in many African countries [5, 7, 10–12].

The fruit is a capsule containing several seeds and reaches maturity between May and June under the climate of Burkina Faso. Its seeds, rich in oil content (50, 60% of the seed weight) with high concentration of oleic acid (59.1% of the oil content), are exploited a lot for oil production (Bazongo et al., 2014; Tiétiambou et al., 2021).

The petroleum ether extract containing seed oil of A. digitata was investigated for analgesic activity. The extract exhibited analgesic activity with the tail flick response in 6.1 s which was not statistically different from aspirin used as positive control ( Khan et al., 2006 ).

The role of Balanites aegyptiaca (L) Delile in the livelihood
If 21% of the 2067 plant species in Burkina Faso is used for human nutrition (Hann et al., 2018; Zizka et al., 2015), it is very important to analyze and assess the uses and the economic value of the most used species, especially those producing marketed NTFPs across climatic zones. Thus, several issues are to be addressed.
For each species, the collected data were the number of actual uses reported (converted to use value-UV, as a measure of the species preference), practiced conservation actions (converted to conservation attitude using a four-scale scoring method), and possible criteria for selecting preferred trees for seed oil extraction.
