Ghana’s Second Refinery Begins Operations, Boosts Local Economy Refining
The refinery was built in two phases, each with a capacity of 2 million tonnes per year (tpy) of crude oil processing. The first phase was commissioned on Jan. 26, 2024, while the second phase is expected to be completed and operational by the end of the year, according to Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
As noted by Makafui, though Ghana’s palm oil production is said to have increased over the decades, the country is a net importer of palm oil. In 2021, the value of palm oil imported by Ghana was $289million as against an export value of $78.1million. This calls for urgent attention to address the challenges in the sector.
