Palm Oil in Gambia | The Observatory of Economic Complexity
The main destination of Palm Oil exports from Gambia are: United States ($21.5k). Imports In 2022, Gambia imported $55.3M in Palm Oil, becoming the 86th largest importer of Palm Oil in the world. At the same year, Palm Oil was the 5th most imported product in Gambia. Gambia imports Palm Oil primarily from: Indonesia ($37.4M), Malaysia ($17.6M
The oil palm tree is an ancient tropical plant that originated from West Africa. Palm oil has centuries׳ long use as food and medicine. This review covers the recent significant materials found in the literature on palm oil processing, refining, and use in frying especially in blends with other vegetable oils.
Palm Kernel Oil Manufacturing Process With Flowchart
The oilcake leaves the extraction machine through an adjustable cone and is then delivered to the second pressing. Because of their high oil content, Palm kernels have to be subjected to 2 stage pressing for maximum oil yield. The residue from First Stage Press is then transferred to a second palm kernel oil expeller machine for final crushing.

Oil palm in the 2020s and beyond: challenges and solutions
There are two contrasting types of oil found in the two principal tissues of palm fruits, namely ‘palm oil’ and ‘palm kernel oil’ (Murphy 2019).Palm oil, extracted from the fleshy mesocarp tissue, is a deep orange-red, semi-solid fluid, whilst palm kernel oil is a white-yellow oil that is extracted mainly from the endosperm tissue of the kernel (seed).
While the volume of imports of West African palm oil into the UK levelled off between the 1850s and 1890s, large-scale production of this new edible product stimulated renewed demand for palm oil
Palm Oil and Palm Kernel Oil Refining and Fractionation Technology
The acidity of crude palm kernel oil can vary, depending on quality, from 2.0 to 6.0%. Poor crude palm kernel oil may show 1.0R/10Y (Lovibond 1″) while good crude palm kernel oil may be no more than 0.4R/4Y (Lovibond 1″); this depends largely upon the way the kernels have been pressed and extracted, shipped, and stored (Patterson, 1992).
“As indicated earlier, Gambia is not producing oil hence will continue to import oil for domestic use in the short and medium term. However, as part of the long term local content and value addition drive and given the strategic location of the country, we intend to process and add value for local consumptions as well as export.”
A Review on the Fundamentals of Palm Oil Fractionation: Processing
The various fraction of palm oil allows it to be used in different types of food products such as margarine, frying oil, and cocoa butter substitute. In fractionation, proper control of the fractionation conditions is important to produce the fractions with desirable stearin and olein quality.
Refining of Crude Palm Kernel Oil The crude palm kernel oil was refined mainly in three stages namely: the degumming stage, neutralization stage, odour and colour removal stage. The Degumming stage The approach adopted was that of [7] where 500ml of crude palm kernel oil put in a separating funnel and 500ml of distilled water at 1000C was added.
