Senegal: Booming groundnuts export to China poses long-term risks
China alone imported more than 323,000 tons of peanuts from Senegal in 2020, equivalent to more than 90 per cent of Senegal’s total peanut exports. In light of these volumes, it is not surprising that the cultivation and export of peanuts offer considerable economic opportunities for farmers, traders, and the state.
In 2019, the price dropped to 0.58 US $ per kg, before increasing to 0.74 US $ per kg in 2020. The price then rose to 0.83 US $ per kg in 2021. Based on this trend, it is predicted that the export price per kilogram of Groundnuts (Peanuts) from Senegal in 2023 will be around 0.81 US $ per kg and in 2024 will be around 0.83 US $ per kg.
