The cleanness of seeds decides the efficiency of oil recovery so that the shells should be removed prior to the subsequent oil extraction process [56], [57]. The presence of shells allows the diffusion of oil from the kernels to the shells during the oil extraction process as the shells can retain the oil in the press cake [58] .
So for each 6000 tonne of seedcake (so about 60,000 m3 of infeed at 10% DM) at least a megawatt of electricity and up to 2 MW of heat are produced. From the jatropha pressed seed providing the proposed supply of biodiesel to make up 5% of 3 million tonne/yr of diesel about 430,000 tonne of seedcake will be produced.

Jatropha curcas L., also known as “physic nut”, “purging nut” or “Barbados nut”, belongs to the family of Euphorbiaceae. It is a perennial and deciduous small tree or tall shrub [ 2] that produces black colored seeds which are rich in oil and protein [ 3 ].
