Feasibility Study for the Edible Oils Sector in Tanzania
5 Sunflower oil provides the strongest opportunity to expand domestic edible oils production, and has potential for high-value exports Notes:*Consumption is used as a proxy for demand, and estimated as production + imports –exports; Estimated values based on extrapolation of 2009-13
thus making sunflower oil the most important vegetable oil produced in Tanzania. While the production of sunflower oil seeds varying between 75,000 to 100,000 tons from year 2001 to 2005, it increased in the last two seasons dramatically to more than 350,000 tons since 2006 (Figure 1). East Coast Oils and Fats is a state-of-the-art facility for the manufacture of edible oils in Tanzania. The plant has a refining capacity of 600 tons per day and 220,000 tons per annum, and has introduced new product lines, including palm oil, sunflower oil, soya oil, margarine and soap (13).
Overall, Tanzania is a net importer of animal or vegetable fats and oils with imports growing by 6% per annum while exports declined by 14.4% per annum between 2010 and 2016 (Figure 5).
Extraction Process, Identification of Fatty Acids, Tocopherols
The present study aimed to extract seed oils and characterize the chemical composition, ... Glycine soja seed contained 16.91% oil whereas other seeds contained oil less than 3%.
Simultaneously, to improve the economics of the sunflower processing model, a separate VAT exemption was placed on sunflower seed-cake – a by-product of oil extraction that is used for animal feed. A further pivotal decision to improve competitiveness was at least maintaining the import tariff on palm oil – 10 percent for crude palm oil and 25 percent for refined palm oil.
Case Study: Driving New Investments into Primer Agriculture in Tanzania
Country Context: Tanzania. Tanzania’s agriculture sector constitutes 30% of the country’s GDP1 and employs nearly two-thirds of the population.2 The primary cash crops are tobacco, cashew nuts, coffee, tea, cloves, cotton and sisal.2. The local and regional market for edible oils is large and growing – but local supply is not keeping up.

FINAL SUNFLOWER PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING, State of the Planet
Oil seed production in Tanzania mainly focuses on ground nuts (40%), sunflower (36%), sesame (15%), cotton (8%) and palm oil (1%). More than half of vegetable oil consumed in Tabora and Tanzania as a whole is imported due to insufficient domestic production. The population of western Tanzania is approximtely 5.8 million in 2012.
