“Ghana exports fish flakes in sunflower oil to the tune of 147 million dollars annually, if the oil is produced in the country, there will be an increase in production of fish flakes which means more income generation,” he said. Mr. Sulemana called for the establishment of a sunflower processing plant to create jobs to resuscitate the economy.

Presently, Ghana imports a minimum of $4 million worth of sunflower oil yearly for fish processing companies, which in turn exports fish flakes in sunflower oil to the tune of $147 million annually. This is because the fish processing companies are mandated by the US Food and Drugs Authority to use sunflower oil to prepare fish flakes.
The refinery is the largest of its kind, processing Crude Palm Oil and packaging of vegetable and sunflower oils under the iconic Frytol brand. Its rice packing plant is a fully automatic ultra-modern plant that processes and packages both imported and local rice.

Sunflower Oil Refinery Plant Process, Oil Expeller
The steps involved in Sunflower Oil Refining Process: Degumming. Neutralization. Water Washing. Vacuum Drying. Bleaching. De-waxing. Deodorisation. The chemical refining stages of Sunflower oil are also similar to other soft oils except dewaxing which is additional as sunflower oil contains wax which will be removed by dewaxing process.
Cold Pressing. In this process at the soya oil mill, the soybeans are pressed as a whole after cleaning. It is a much simpler method but being keen is essential in controlling the temperature and moisture. The soybeans are pressed together at strictly 8 to 10 percent moisture. The oil press is also supposed to be heated to 80 degrees.
