Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) Extraction Plant, Oil Expeller
Cashew nut shells contain 20 – 25 % oil content. After pressing, a residual oil of less than 10 – 12 % is left in the oilcake. The working principle of the Cashew Nut Shell Press is to forcefully push the cashew nut shell through the chamber by the action of the rotating screws.
Hot oil bath process – The raw cashew nuts with shell are passed through a bath of hot CNSL at 180 to 200 deg. C, resulting in bursting of the shell and releasing the CNSL. However, only 50% of the CNSL present in the shell is extracted by this process.
Cashew Nut Shell Oil — A Renewable, IntechOpen
Cashew nut shell, a by-product of the cashew industry, is an embodiment of a useful chemical serving as a raw material for the petrochemical industry. Cashew ( Anacardium Occidentale L.), a well-known species of the Anacardiceae family [ 1 ], is a tropical plant (shrub) found within the region between 23 ° N and 23 ° S of the equator.
The effect of natural CNSL on the pour point and rheology of crude oil was investigated by researcher reported that the pour point of the test crude oil with 4000 ppm dose of CNSL was depressed by 6°C, the CNSL reduced the viscosity of the two waxy crude oils (from the different oil wells sampled) by 60% and 35% respectively during Couette

In this way, natural CNSL represents the original composition found in nature, which is basically composed by anacardic acids (60–70 %), cardols (10–20 %), cardanols (3–10 %), 2-methylcardols (2–5 %), and other minor constituents [19, 44]. On the other hand, technical CNSL is the by-product of the cashew nut industrial processing.
The hydraulic press uses high pressure to remove CNSL from the raw cashew nut shells after they have been screw-pressed into place. The percentage of CNSL extracted was 20.65–21.04%, the percentage of CNSL purity was 85.53–87.8 weight percent, and the rate of extraction was 11.93–14.90 kg/h (Subbarao et al. 2011 ).

The iodine ( 188.1 ± 2.3 gI 2 /100 g) and saponification (138.1 ± 3.2 mg KOH/g) values indicated that CNSL was a drying oil making it suitable for resins, surface coating materials 17,86
This involves the use of a screw press. Raw cashew nut-shells are put in the hydraulic press on screw pressing, and then a high pressure is exerted on it to force out the oil from the shells. This method is direct and quick, among other methods of extraction (38). 1.2.3. Solvent extraction This method gives a high yield of the oil compared to

The estimation of oil content in the cashew nut shells was carried out using a Soxhlet apparatus. The experiments were conducted at four different levels of moisture (8.12, 10.06, 12.17 and 14.20% (wb)) for the extraction of CNSL by screw press method. Average oil content in cashew nut shells was found to be 26.45%.
