Soybean rust threatens soybean production in Malawi
Soybeans are a significant source of oil and protein, and soybean demand has been increasing over the last decade in Malawi and Zambia. Soybean contributes to human nutrition, is used in producing animal feed, and fetches a higher price per unit than maize, thus serving as a cash crop for smallholder farmers. These are among the main factors
Soybean production reached 220 kt in 2022 in Malawi, according to Faostat. This is 16.8% less than in the previous year. Historically, soybean production in Malawi reached an all time high of 264 kt in 2021 and an all time low of 40.0 kt in 2005. Malawi has been ranked 26th within the group of 99 countries we follow in terms of soybean production.
The poverty impacts of improved soybean technologies in Malawi
The study conducted. ff. in Malawi by Darko et al. (2018), for instance, used the simulation (ex-ante) method and found that a 50% increase in maize yield can potentially reduce poverty by 6.77 percentage points among rural agricultural households, which supports the results of our study at least by the direction.
Soybean also contains about 20% oil with an important fatty acid lecithin and vitamins A and D. Soybean is also fairly rich in phosphorous and calcium. In Malawi, the utilization of soy beans varies among smallholder farmers; with some using it as a source of income while others use it for house consumption.
Effects of physical properties and operating parameters on
The soybean crushing industry aims at attaining greater oil extraction by optimizing flake thickness. This involves modifying the physical and viscoelastic properties of cracked soybeans and adjusting operational settings of the flaking roll stands. Vibratory feeders distributed 20–32% fewer cracked soybeans at the roll ends and 12% fewer cracks at the center. This increased the variability
Soybean is in great demand both for the production of protein-rich meals as well as for livestock feed. GMO-free soybean from Malawi already earns a premium in export markets. Potential export earnings from groundnuts, grown by poor communities throughout Malawi, are estimated at around US$48.4 million, of which over half is as yet unrealised.
