Before the cultivation of GM cotton, the majority of all cotton in Burkina Faso had an average fiber length of 28.58 mm. But after the introduction of GM cotton, much of the cotton had a fiber length of 26.98mm. Cotton companies say this difference of 1.6mm cost them 50 billion CFA (US$89.5 million) over five cropping seasons.
