The $2.8bn Girassol project is located within Block 17, about 210km north-northwest of Luanda, Angola. It lies in 1,350m of water and was developed using a subsea facility tied back to a floating production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO). Total's production averaged 211,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2018 from Blocks 0, 14, 14K, 17, and 32, as well as Angola LNG. This heads of agreement is an important milestone towards a final investment decision expected in 2023, after partners and authorities’ approval. This future development project on Blocks 20 and 21, located around 150 km southwest of Luanda, will comprise an FPSO, the seventh for TotalEnergies in Angola, connected to a subsea network.
This project is part of Angola’s broader economic development strategy as the country seeks to capitalize on its significant oil reserves. Sonangol is concurrently involved in other major refinery projects, including one in Soyo capable of producing up to 100,000 barrels of crude per day and another in Cabinda set to distill 60,000 barrels of refined oil daily.
