A guide to soybean production in Malawi
1.2 Soybean production trends in Malawi. Agronomic studies on soybean have shown that the crop is well adapted for production in all. agro-ecological zones in Malawi. However, soybean yields are
Processing 10 lb. (4.53 kg) of soybean yields 1.83 lb. (0.83 kg) of soy oil and 8 lb. (3.63 kg) of soymeal, accounting for approximately 80% of raw soybean (Uses for Soybeans, 2011). Approximately 97% of total soymeal is used for animal feed and the rest of 3% of used for human consumption in the form of soy protein isolates, soy protein concentrate, soymilk, meat analog, etc., ( Food and Fuel
Unlocking the Potential of Soy in Malawi | Agrilinks
Despite its huge potential, the soy value chain has remained inert, with little done to stimulate output in terms of yield and quality. While soy yield globally is 4,000 kg per hectare, in Malawi an average farmer harvests a mere 800 kg for the same land size. Lack of quality seed and limited varieties are major challenges facing the value chain.

Overview, Key Issues, Challenges and Opportunities in the Groundnuts
Purpose of the Study. Provide evidence-based insights and policy guidance in the following areas: Addressing key constraints to expanding production base and quality in groundnuts, sunflower and soybeans. Introducing active policies and measures to safeguard livelihoods, promote women’s empowerment, ensure environmental sustainability
The responsibility of soybean and soybean oil-processing plant management is to ensure expected performance results over the operating life of the asset. The performance objectives are to provide timely customer service, deliver high-quality products, operate at a competitive cost, produce at operating-capacity volume, give top priority to personnel safety, meet government regulatory requirement.

Soybean production reached 220 kt in 2022 in Malawi, according to Faostat. This is 16.8% less than in the previous year. Historically, soybean production in Malawi reached an all time high of 264 kt in 2021 and an all time low of 40.0 kt in 2005. Malawi has been ranked 26th within the group of 99 countries we follow in terms of soybean production.

Soybean also contains about 20% oil with an important fatty acid lecithin and vitamins A and D. Soybean is also fairly rich in phosphorous and calcium. In Malawi, the utilization of soy beans varies among smallholder farmers; with some using it as a source of income while others use it for house consumption.
Refining of soybean oil, to make a neutral, bland-flavored, and light-colored oil, results in several by-products. The by-products consist of various mixtures of phosphatides, unsaponifiables, glycerides, free fatty acids, and soap. Lecithin contains mostly hydratable phosphatides, together with some free fatty acids and neutral oil (glycerides).
