DRAFT TANZANIA STANDARD, TBS
generally striped in appearance and larger in size, with lower oil content. Sunflower seeds and their oil are good sources of fat, protein, fibre and vitamins, as well as certain minerals. This Tanzania Standard is intended to guide farmers/traders in achieving quality of sunflower seeds required for oil extraction in internal and external market.
Simultaneously, to improve the economics of the sunflower processing model, a separate VAT exemption was placed on sunflower seed-cake – a by-product of oil extraction that is used for animal feed. A further pivotal decision to improve competitiveness was at least maintaining the import tariff on palm oil – 10 percent for crude palm oil
Tanzania Sunflower Sector Development Strategy 2016-2020
The United Republic of Tanzania has a large, national demand for edible oil. The Rural Livelihood Development Company estimated a minimum national demand of around 330,000 tons of edible oil per annum in 2010, a figure that was expected to increase as consumption rose by 3% annually. Currently more than half of the edible oil consumed is imported.
Oil seed production in Tanzania mainly focuses on ground nuts (40%), sunflower (36%), sesame (15%), cotton (8%) and palm oil (1%). More than half of vegetable oil consumed in Tabora and Tanzania as a whole is imported due to insufficient domestic production. The population of western Tanzania is approximtely 5.8 million in 2012.
