Tunisian farmers cash in on miracle prickly pear crop
Rows of sprawling cacti fill a valley in central Tunisia, where producers are hoping the spiky fruit can fuel a cosmetics cash-in. “This is the capital of the Barbary fig,” said Mohamed Rochdi Bannani, one of the North African country’s first producers of cosmetic oil from the seeds of the fruit — better known as the prickly pear.
Tunisia is already one of the top three olive oil exporters, with revenue hitting a record $1.3 billion last year thanks to rising prices despite a 6% fall in sales volumes. But around 90% of
Tunisian Date Cultivars: Economical Aspect, Physicochemical ..., Springer
The date’s cores are then removed, the fruit are pressed, the obtained juice is filtered and then cooked over low heat until obtaining a blackish syrup. In other regions, local populations consume R’fiss which is a date paste kneaded with hot grilled semolina (wheat or barley) and butter or olive oil, then shaped into regular pieces.
A natural antioxidant-emulsifier was developed from oil pressed Pistacia lentiscus fruit and tested for oil-in-water nanoemulsions β-carotene encapsulation. Five extracts were prepared, characterized and screened for their emulsifying capacity. The extract prepared with 75% ethanol (Ex-75%), displayed the highest antioxidant capacity (EC50 = 4.6 ± 0.2 mg/mL), which was significantly
Dole Sunshine Company partners with EDB New Ventures to create a new

Oil content, phenolic profiling and antioxidant potential of Tunisian
CONCLUSION: A relationship between the changes in phenolic content and the physicochemical changes in Tunisian olive fruit during maturation was established. These findings could be used for controlling the production processes and correlating the oil sensorial characteristics to the polyphenolic pattern.
Palmitic and linoleic acids were estimated in higher amounts in pericarp lipids. Total sterol contents were 36.93 g kg−1 oil in seed, 6.29 g kg−1 oil in fruit and 4.30 g kg−1 oil in pericarp. Fruit and pericarp oils were characterized by a high proportion of β-sitosterol, with 36.7% and 49.4% of total sterols, respectively.
