Canola is a relatively new crop in South Africa. In 1992/93, only 400 tones canola grain was produced, compared with 41 000 in 2003/2004, 38 150 in 2007/2008, 57 340 tones in 2011/12, 79 000 tones in 2013/2014 and 1690 375 tones in 2015. Currently, South Africa imports more than half its oil and oilcake requirements from other countries every year.
The canola marketing season in South Africa commences on 1 October and ends on 30 September the following year. Notes from Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP) Baseline 2023-2032 : Area under canola increased by nearly 42 000 hectares in 2022 relative to average levels from 2017 to 2021, with production volumes expanding by 60%.

Most of this is produced under dryland conditions in the Western Cape, but small volumes are also derived from the Eastern Cape. Production started with five farmers, over an area of 400 ha, with 400 to 420 farmers planting canola nowadays.
In 2019 South Africa shipped 21,159,543 tonnes of rapeseeds (canola). In 2019 alone, the market for South Africa rapeseeds (canola) (oil seeds category) has shrunk, with a change of -9.065 per cent compared to the year 2018. Between 2017 and 2019, rapeseeds (canola)'s exports decreased by -16.81 pc bringing South Africa US$0.07m for the year 2019.
