PHYSICAL REFINING OF SUNFLOWER OIL
Sunflower oil has a high nutritional value, having 62-70% linoleic acid content (essential fatty acid) but on the other hand this high polyunsaturated fatty acid content makes this oil sensitive to oxidation. Crude sunflower oil, which has reached a certain level of oxidation is difficult to refine. There are two main difficulties: 1.
The most suitable temperature for the growth of sunflower seed is 20 – 27°C with abundant water. There are several varieties of seeds available consisting of 36% of Oil to 40% oil-based on cultivated area soil condition and species of the seed. The oil extracted from sunflower seeds either by Screw Press or by Solvent Extraction Process.

Sunflower seed oil is used for making cooking oil, salad oil, margarine, and shortening. The oil has a light-yellow color and a distinct smell, which can be eliminated through deodorization [72] .
Summary: Physical refining has several advantages compared to the classical chemical one. This process is more economical (improved yield, lower investment cost, less chemicals used) environmental friendly process (no soapstock to be treated, splitted) but more sensitive to the crude oil quality. Physical refining of sunflower oil is discussed
Optimization of neutralization parameters in minimal refining
The estimated optimal parameters for neutralization of sunflower seed oil were Ca(OH)₂ at 0.30%, 53.0°C, and 19.7 min; MgO at 0.38%, 57.6°C, and 17.8 min; and Na₂SiO₃ at 0.81%, 55.7°C and 19.1 min. NOVELTY IMPACT STATEMENT: Minimal refining of vegetable oils is a new approach (from the idea that “Less‐processed oils are healthier
Sunflower is crushed for oil recovery via one of two process methods, hard pressing or prepress solvent extraction. Hard pressing relies upon exerting high pressure on the prepared seed to separate oil from the solids fraction, historically recovering about 25% oil from the seed. Prepress solvent extraction relies on exerting medium pressure on

Total average reduction for sunflower seed oil samples during refining process was 32.9%. The level was about 13.8 mg/100 g in crude sunflower oil and about 9.2 mg/100 g in refined sunflower oil. Table 4

The aim of this study was to identify the chlorine source during sunflower oil production and propose mitigation strategies in order to prevent monochloropropane-diol ester (MCPDE) formation. Whole sunflower seeds, the separated kernel, hulls, and pressed cake were studied to pinpoint the location of chlorine donors originating from the crop. Acid–water-based degumming, bleaching, cooling
The refining process of sunflower seed oil mainly includes several stages: pretreatment, degumming, deacidification, decolorization, deodorization, and dewaxing.
