The Gambia’s Groundnuts: Identifying Problems and Solutions
Groundnuts are the main cash crop in Gambia. The crop takes up one third of the country’s arable land. One quarter of Gambia’s population is associated with groundnuts. The Saho family has grown groundnuts for three generations. Tasmir now oversees three of the nine largest groundnut processing plants in Gambia.
The project aims at improving groundnut handling and decorticating facilities at Kaur, and handling, decorticating and milling facilities at Denton Bridge. It should remove bottlenecks increase efficiency, and make it possible to increase throughput from 40,000 tons to 65,000 tons of undecorticated groundnuts in the existing oil mill.

Step 1: Cleaning. After harvesting groundnut are received at processing facilities. Batches of harvested peanuts will contain whole peanuts in the shell, some shelled peanuts, and foreign objects (e.g., leaves, nodes, weed seed, etc.). The peanuts are then cleaned using cleaning machine so that oil is not contaminated with foreign materials.

Is the Sky the Limit for The Gambia's Groundnuts?
Growing up on a farm with his father and grandfather informed Saho about groundnut cultivation, he says, and now he oversees three of the nine largest groundnut processing plants in Gambia. It is mainly to the north and east of Barra that the Atlantic monsoon has long poured some 800 millimeters of rain every summer—more than London sees in a
Groundnut Kernels obtained after the Decortication process can be used as a raw material for Groundnut Oil Extraction Plant. Groundnut Kernels contain 40 – 45 % oil content. After a double stage pressing, about 5 – 7 % residual oil is left in the Groundnut meal which is an excellent source of Animal Feed.
