Application of central composite design for optimization of
Bio-oil yield was the primary response that was maximized in order to obtain the optimum parameter values that produced the most bio-oil. The best parameter values for maximum bio-oil yield were pyrolysis temperature of 600 °C, nitrogen flow rate of 0.3 L min −1, and reaction time of 90 minutes. The model predicted a maximum bio-oil yield of
The use of fossil fuels in modern economies has been a success because of the low cost of fossil resources. However, the depletion of fossil reserves, the increase in waste production and global warming concerns have led to increased research on the production of biofuels from renewable resources. Waste production is steadily increasing in quantity and constantly changing in quality, creating
Machine learning aided bio-oil production with high energy
Bio-oil from HTL is of high energy density and generally has a higher calorific value (e.g., higher heating value, HHV) than the original biomass [7], [9]. However, the bio-oil from HTL has poor fuel qualities, such as high viscosity, high acidity, and high contents of oxygen and nitrogen (N), making it impossible to use directly in engines [10].
In 2019, the Gabonese government had set an ambitious target of 220,000 bpd of crude oil production by 2023. Although that target was missed, production in April stood at 200,000 bpd, up from 180,000 in 2020. The 20,000 bpd of production needed to close the remaining gap is in sight, largely thanks to 18 exploration and appraisal wells drilled
Setting the Scene for the Revitalization of Gabon’s Oil
Prior to the onset of the pandemic in 2020, the oil price crash of 2014 had also taken its toll on Gabon, for which oil exports accounted for 80% of total exports and 50% of government revenues at the time. OPEC’s decision to increase production in Q3 of that year roughly halved the global price of oil as well as Gabon’s exports.
The paper reviews the history of production and application of bio-oil (pyrolysis oil), describes its differences from other types of fuel and chemical feedstock, and considers problems associated with classifying and defining bio-oil and biofuel. The basic physicochemical properties of bio-oil are described, along with a demonstration of their variation depending on the used feedstock
Machine learning prediction and optimization of bio-oil
Besides, the properties of bio-oil varied observably because of various algae species and HTL operating conditions. Thus, it was necessary to develop and optimize the ML models to identify and mediate the crucial factors for bio-oil production with desired properties. It is always time-consuming and labor-intensive to quantitative relationship between influential variables and bio-oil yield and environmental sustainability impact in the hydrothermal conditions. Machine learning was used to predict bio-oil yield. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is further conducted to assess its environmental sustainability effect.
