Towards edible oil self-sufficiency in Ethiopia: Lessons
Palm oil and palm kernel oil are extracted from oil palm fruit flesh and seed respectively (Kalyana, et. a. Citation 2003). Out of the total palm oil produced in 2016, 72% is used for food, 18% for personal care and detergent and 10% for biofuel (Voora, Citation 2020). In 2016, 75% of the total palm oil produced or 48.9 million tons worth of 28
According to reports by New Business Ethiopia, the facility with a daily production capacity of 1.5 million litres of palm oil is deemed to be the largest edible oil factory in the country to potentially cover 60% of the country’s demand when fully operational.

Edible oil for consumption in Ethiopia is mainly imported from different countries. In calendar year (CY) 15, Ethiopia imported 479,000 metric tons of cooking oil, valued at nearly $474 million dollars. Of this imported oil, more than 90 percent by volume was palm oil, most of which comes from Indonesia and Malaysia.
The small-scale palm oil venture is dominated by elderly people from 50 years and above (30%). About 34% and 32% of the processors have WASC and Primary School Leaving Certificates respectively as the educational qualification. About 50% of the processors have 16-20 years experience in oil palm processing.
Edible oil manufacturing, import market of Ethiopia
4. Palm Oil: Although not as widely produced as other oils, palm oil production has gained some traction in Ethiopia. Palm trees are mainly cultivated in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR) of Ethiopia. The extraction process involves pressing the palm fruit to obtain crude palm oil. Manufacturing Process
The oil recovery from PPF can contribute to an OER increase of approximately 0.46% to 0.6%. Out of approximately 450 palm oil mills in Malaysia, only about 10 to 15 mills are installed with the PPF solvent extraction plants. The total production capacity is ap-proximately 1500 to 2000 tons of crude fibre oil monthly.
Improving the efficiency of the Ethiopian oil chain
Oilseeds in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has favorable agro‐climatic conditions for cultivation oilseeds and is one of the centers of origins in the world for several oil crop plants like rapeseed, niger/noug seed, and castor beans. Other oilseeds like linseed, soybeans, groundnuts, sunflower and safflower seeds are produced in different parts of the
In a large-scale consumer survey across the UK population on the perceptions of vegetable oils, palm oil was deemed to be the least environmentally friendly. 1 It wasn’t even close. 41% of people thought palm oil was ‘environmentally unfriendly,’ compared to 15% for soybean oil, 9% for rapeseed, 5% for sunflower, and 2% for olive oil. 43% also answered ‘Don’t know,’ meaning that
Direct recovery of palm carotene by liquid-liquid extraction
Carotene was directly recovered from crude palm oil (CPO) by liquid-liquid extraction. Solvation model based on density was used in analysis of solvent selection. The multistage extraction of palm carotene achieved good recovery (68.49 %). Direct extraction minimizes disruption of CPO for other palm oil derivatives production.
Palm oil extraction process, refining and health consequences of palm oil have been addressed in the present review. Palm oil is extracted both from fruit and seed of palm tree and it is the world’s most commonly used vegetable oil. However, its high saturated fatty acid content raised controversies over consumption of the oil.
