Optimization Methods for the Extraction of Vegetable Oils: A
The three major steps involved in solvent extraction are oilseed cleaning and conditioning, oil extraction, and separation of the miscella. Crude oil and meal quality depend mostly on type of solvent used, reaction temperature, and type of pretreatment given to the oilseed [ 25, 26 ].
1.1. Chemical Refining of Oil. Chemical refining is the traditional method used since ancient times. It can be used for all fats and oils even when they have been slightly degraded. Each step of the refining process has specific functions for removing some undesirable compounds. Chemical refining follows six processes:
Edible vegetable oils from oil crops: Preparation, refining
Vegetable oil is rich in triglycerides and contains fatty acids and micronutrients (tocopherols, phospholipids, sterols, carotenoids, etc.) [1]. It has been widely used in the cooking, food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, among others [2]. The annual growth rate of global demand for vegetable oil was 5.14% from 2020 to 2025 [111].
7.2.1 Cold Pressed Oil. Nowadays, and comparing with oils obtained by conventional solvent extractions, cold-pressed oils attracted much more worldwide interest thanks to their nutritional and health benefits as well as their richness in bioactive components (Nederal et al. 2012), and leads to an increase in the demand for bioactive compounds of plant origin (Czaplicki et al. 2011).
Comparing the extraction methods, chemical composition
Depending on the solvent and the extraction technique, the total content of phenolic compounds in the hemp seed oil increased as follows: methanolic extract (SPE, 0.004 ± 0.0010 mg GAE/g oil
12.4.1 Olive Oil. Olive oil is extracted from olive fruit ( Olea europaea L.) by several extraction processes. These fruits with different shapes, sizes (e.g. 2–3 cm width and length) and pulp per stone ratios (3.0–6.5) contain between 36 and 53% water (w/w), whereas oil ranges between 18 and 27%.
Production process, methods of extraction, and refining
Solvent extraction of oil. The solvent extraction method is often applied to oil seeds with low oil content (< 20%) (Sinha et al., 2015, Yusuf, 2017). It is one of the most efficient methods for vegetable oil extraction, with low residual oil in the cake or meal, but attention must be paid to the handling and recovery of the organic solvent.
oil extraction irrespective of the method that follows because when carefully controlled it can lead to the achievement of high oil yields and positively influences downstream operations [19]. 2.1.
Review Optimization Methods for the Extraction of Vegetable
The work summarizes the general methods of oil extraction from oilseeds, followed by the different types of optimizations techniques used for the various extraction processes including modelling and the software used in the optimization process. The last section of the work is centered on the oil quality as affected by the extraction methods
This book covers the technology of vegetable oil extraction, including theory, process technologies used for various oilseeds, machinery operation and design aspects. Pertinent topics are covered in two parts: mechanical expression and solvent extraction. The importance of each preparation operation is explained as related to oilseed structure
