Nacala Will Industrially Produce Refined Oil Starting October
A new cooking oil refinery, produced from soybeans and sunflower seeds, is being built in the city of Nacala-Porto, Nampula province, and should start operating next October. With the enterprise it is intended to reduce foreign dependence, since the country imports 80% of cooking oil consumed in the national market. The administrator of the RG
The steps involved in Sunflower Oil Refining Process: Degumming. Neutralization. Water Washing. Vacuum Drying. Bleaching. De-waxing. Deodorisation. The chemical refining stages of Sunflower oil are also similar to other soft oils except dewaxing which is additional as sunflower oil contains wax which will be removed by dewaxing process.
Effect of refining on quality and composition of sunflower oil
Process flow diagramme for refining of sunflower oil. Degumming. The crude oil in the open conical tank was heated to 45 °C and degummed by adding 0.2 % phosphoric acid (50 % w/w strength) with slow agitation for 30 min. Then the oil was settled for 30 min and the water with dissolved gum was drained out.
An experimental oil refining unit has been developed and tested for sunflower oil. Crude pressed sunflower oil obtained from a local oil mill was refined using chemical method by degumming, neutralization, bleaching and dewaxing. The quality and composition of crude and refined oil were analysed compared. Reduction in phosphorous content from 6.15 ppm to 0, FFA content from 1.1 to 0.24 %

Figure 1 represents schematically the main steps of sunflower oil extraction and refining. There are five main stages where there is a potential leak of minor components: Degumming, neutralization
Sunflower oil has a high nutritional value, having 62-70% linoleic acid content (essential fatty acid) but on the other hand this high polyunsaturated fatty acid content makes this oil sensitive to oxidation. Crude sunflower oil, which has reached a certain level of oxidation is difficult to refine. There are two main difficulties: 1.
Chemical refining of sunflower oil: Effect on oil
Oleic and linoleic acid contents of canola oils obtained from each refining step were determined between 60.64% (deodorized oil) and 64.04% (neutralized oil) to 19.93% (neutralized oil) and 24.58%
The refinery in southern Maputo province will be capable of producing 350,000 barrels of refined fuel per day when it becomes operational in seven years, Mozambique's energy ministry said in a
Sunflower oil, Chemical refining, Physical refining
Crude extracted sunflower oil contains 0.8% phosphatidic acid and 33.7% phosphatidylethanolamine, while crude pressed oil contains 0.1% phosphatidic acid and 41.7% phosphatidylethanolamine. After water degumming, the phosphorus content in extracted sunflower oil remained at 84.1 mg/kg, which is 33.4%, and the remaining phospholipids
2.1 Refined vs. crude oil. The purpose of refining sunflower oil is to convert the crude oil, which has a high acidity level and/or organoleptic defects, to make it suitable for human consumption. The refining is also aimed at removing contaminants as pesticides and process solvents.
