Sunflower processing unit launch in Arusha, Tanzania

We Effect, together with Mtandao wa Vikundi vya Wakulima na Wafugaji in Arusha (MVIWAARUSHA), launched a food processing unit for sunflower oil and maize at Ekenywa, Arusha District, Tanzania. Tanzania is the largest producer of sunflower seeds in the East African region, taking about 78 percent of the market share in the region.

The United Republic of Tanzania has a large, national demand for edible oil. The Rural Livelihood Development Company estimated a minimum national demand of around 330,000 tons of edible oil per annum in 2010, a figure that was expected to increase as consumption rose by 3% annually. Currently more than half of the edible oil consumed is imported.

Box 1. Contract Farming in the Kiteto Districts, Tanzania In 2007, the RLDC business partner in Kiteto started to run a sunflower oil processing plant in Kibaya. The partner processes 40-50 bages of sunflower seeds per day, operating the plant 7-9 months per year, processing a total of 9,000-13,000 bags per year.

The essence is that enterprises dealing with processing sunflower oilseeds are producing and supplying sunflower cooking oil in a less competitive environment in terms of quantity, quality, and price.
