Early 19th-century boom. Palm oil has been known in Europe since the 15th century, but it was Liverpool and Bristol slave traders who, in the early 19th century, began larger-scale imports. Palm oil and palm kernel oils are produced in Nigeria from three production systems: natural/semi natural groves, smallholders, and small/medium sized estates and large estates.
