  • Why did the Sudanese oil refinery resume operations?
  • CAIRO (AP) — An oil refinery in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum resumed operations following a brief halt due to an act of “sabotage” on one of its pipelines, state-run media said on Monday. According to the SUNA news agency, the pipeline was “forced to stop for a limited period due to sabotage of the crude carrier line.”
  • Where is Sudan’s oil refinery?
  • The refinery is next to the Garri power station, one of Sudan’s largest electricity providers. In the video, an unnamed official says that RSF troops have surrounded the complex in a 40km radius. “We have 200 per cent control over Sudan,” he says before the clip ends.
  • Does Sudan need a refinery?
  • The refinery may be even more important: according to a 2022 assessment by the International Energy Agency, Sudan’s refined fuel demand was about 150,000 barrels per day, with Al Jaili producing about 100,000 barrels per day of that requirement.
  • How much oil does Sudan export?
  • Sudan exported $317 million in crude oil exports in 2020. In 2021, its oil fields produced 59,000 barrels per day (bpd). The Sudan Oil Refinery has the capacity to refine 90-95,000 bpd. The Sudanese government also receives an in-kind royalty payment of 14,000 bpd from the government of South Sudan for oil pipeline transit rights to Port Sudan.
