  • Where are palm oil mills located?
  • A mill’s sourcing area overlaps Taman Negara National Park, Malaysia (included in the World Database on Protected Areas). This unprecedented data set consists of 782 palm oil mills, spread across 15 countries. As anticipated, the vast majority of these mills are found in Malaysia (50 percent) and Indonesia (44 percent).
  • Is Sudan IV present in edible palm oil samples?
  • Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) coupled with chemometric methods was applied to detect the presence of Sudan IV in some edible palm oil samples. We studied the samples within the 1200–1800cm 1 Raman frequency range. In predicting adulteration, we used 1388cm 1 Raman peak that is associated with Sudan IV as our marker.
  • Where are palm oil mills located in Indonesia?
  • Within Indonesia, palm oil mills are largely concentrated in a few provinces. Nearly 13 percent of all mills included in the data are in the Riau province of Sumatra, Indonesia, which is also a hotspot for recent fires that caused severe haze and alarming air quality. • Why are there low concentrations of Sudans I–IV in palm oil?
  • As a result, it appears that the most likely source of the low concentrations measured in the spice samples obtained in the Washington, DC, region is related to cross-contamination during sample processing and storage. A method for the extraction and analysis of Sudans I–IV in palm oil using LC-MS/MS was developed and validated.
