Can mechanical pressing be used for rapeseed oil extraction?
The investigation of mechanical pressing for rapeseed oil extraction has been limited. In one study, a screw-pressing method achieved an extraction degree of 72% [ 16 ]. Another study using a ‘duo’ screw press demonstrated a higher extraction degree of 82.6% [ 17 ].
How is rapeseed oil extracted?
The extraction of the seed oil was done in triplicate. The oil content of the seeds was 40.9±0.1%. The rapeseed oil was obtained using an oil screw press (Model SPU 20, Elektromotor-imon, Senta, Serbia) using various nozzle diameters (8–12 mm), temperatures of the press head (40–80 °C), and screw frequencies (40–60 Hz).
How much crude oil is extracted by cold pressing rapeseed oil?
As a result, the crude oil extraction degree achieved by cold pressing was 60.8% compared to the Soxhlet method. This extraction degree is lower than previously reported for screw pressing of rapeseed [ 16, 17 ]. The obtained pressed rapeseed oil contained about 88.5% of crude rapeseed oil and 11.5% of solid residue.
How to maximize rapeseed oil yield?
In the present study, the optimization aimed to maximize rapeseed oil yield by selecting the suitable screw pressing conditions, i.e., the best nozzle diameter, press head temperature, and screw frequency in the applied experimental domain, by employing the desirability function method.
