Sunflower Farming in South Africa | ADAMA South Africa
Almost 80% of South Africa’s sunflower production is concentrated in the North West and Free State provinces. Soils should be sandy loam, with a clay percentage of less than 20%. Farmers plant sunflower seeds between November and January, while harvesting happens between late April and mid-May. Between 2009 and 2021, the average area under
Monitor the moisture content of the seeds and harvest when the moisture level is low enough to prevent spoilage. Cut the flower heads and hang them in a well-ventilated area to dry. Extract the seeds from the flower heads for consumption or further processing. By considering these ten crucial factors before growing sunflowers in South Africa
Sunflower farming an opportunity for local producers
The sunflower seed delivered to CEOCO had an oil content of between 46% and 48%. Based on an average sunflower price of R5 887/ton, producers received price premiums of 12% (R706) to 15% (R883) per ton. On top of the improved price, producers who took part in the pilot reported average yields of 2t/ha – significantly higher than the current
Oilseeds. Improving yield and oil content. Vegetable oil made from sunflower seed is preferred by consumers because they are relatively high in unsaturated fats and low in saturated fats. High consumer demand makes these plants attractive for growers, as does their yield stability under adverse growing conditions.
How to Farm Sunflowers, South Africa
When making sunflower oil the sunflower seeds are cleaned and the hulls are removed. The cleaned seeds (‘meat’) are crushed and further ground up before the meat is heated. The meat is sent to the expeller and crushed into sunflower meal and crude oil. Solvents are used to extract the last oil from the oilseed cake.
Processing of sunflower seeds by a good number of oil manufacturing industries in South Africa makes sunflower oil readily available in their market. Sunflower meal and husk are domesticated in feeding livestock as a source of energy. Among the cereal grains cultivated in South Africa, sunflower seeds account for 5% of the total production.
About Us, Vergezocht
Vergezocht Plant Oils are situated in the Bainsvlei district 25 km from Bloemfontein in the Free State province, South Africa. The name Vergezocht originated from the farm Vergezocht where High Oleic Sunflower was planted for the first time in South Africa as collaboration between the owner Mr. P.F Hugo and the seed company PANNAR. The
Sunflowers need to produce an oil content percentage of 36% or more to be considered good quality. Last season’s harvest fell short of that percentage, putting the industry in peril. Luckily for South African producers, oil content in sunflower seeds is largely dependent on the cultivar or variety chosen by the farmer.
The future of sunflower production in South Africa
Over the past two decades, the South African sunflower industry has been characterised by volatile production levels with virtually no real growth while domestic demand for oilcake and vegetable oil has increased by approximately 40%. The imports of seed, oil and cake have gradually been increasing to meet the rising domestic demand levels.
Vergezocht Plant Oils is the first factory in Africa to produce cold-pressed, high-oleic sunflower oil. Sabrina Dean visited the plant in Bloemfontein in the Free State to find out more about Vergezocht’s business plan, which is built around using a niche sunflower cultivar to produce a high-demand product in a world moving towards healthier lifestyles.
