Identifying early-stage interventions to transform palm oil processing in Burundi, Triple Line Consulting
This yielded a shortlist of tropical fruit, palm oil, coffee, tea, flowers, essential oils and logistics. We then carried out a detailed market systems analyses for those subsectors, assessed their potential impact in terms of scale, effect on the balance of trade, and job creation potential, and then derived a list of key strategic interventions for each subsector and assessed their feasibility.
A great portion of energy consumption in EAC is traditional biomass. Burundi accounts 96.6% of total consumption in form of wood and charcoal whereas electricity, petroleum products and other are respectively represented by 0.6%, 2.7% and 0.1% [ 3 ]. The reliance on traditional use of biomass in Kenya is 68% of its total energy consumption [ 4 ].

The global palm oil industry is targeting an increased oil extraction rate in oil palm milling to meet global demand. This can be achieved through the certification of mills and adherence to bunch grading as part of ensuring that only high-quality and ripe fresh fruit bunches are accepted and processed at all mills. However, the current grading process requires the analysis of oil palm bunches

Referring to the balance sheet table 1, the number of empty bunches that used as fuel is about 12.6 tons/hour with a moisture content of about 60% and palm oil mill operations average about 20 hours per day and 285 days per year. Thus, the annual solid waste palm oil production is about 72,000 tons (60% moisture content).
