340.5 tons of sunflower produced by farmers on 208 hectares and 10,215 liters of virgin oil was processed by two oil plants from sunflower produced by farmers. Rwanda produces at least 80,000 metric tonnes of edible oil every year and imports an average of 125,000 metric tonnes. In 2019, Rwanda only exported 37,399 kilogrammes of cooking oil, which generated Rwf257.8 million (US$256,000) while re-exports were equivalent to 42,664,161 kilogrammes worth Rwf33.7 billion (US$33.5m).

Oil seed production in Tanzania mainly focuses on ground nuts (40%), sunflower (36%), sesame (15%), cotton (8%) and palm oil (1%). More than half of vegetable oil consumed in Tabora and Tanzania as a whole is imported due to insufficient domestic production. The population of western Tanzania is approximtely 5.8 million in 2012.

Rukmana (2004) states that the content of sunflower oil's content ranges from 23 to 45%. 11.7% oleic acid and 44-72% linoleic acid are both present in sunflower oil.
The highest oil extraction ratio (OER) of 17.90% and oil extraction efficiency (OEE) of 79.56% were obtained at the sterilization time of 60 min, digestion time of 10 min and screw speed of 10 rpm. In Malaysia alone, 85% of palm oil mill already implement the anaerobic and facultative ponding system (Zhang et al., 2008).
