  • Does palm oil have Sudan IV dye?
  • Even though all the regions used for the study did not have the Sudan IV dye in all the ten samples of the palm oil we collected, the Sudan dye was present in more than half of the palm oil. Other regions also registered Sudan IV values slightly below 50%.
  • Is Sudan IV present in edible palm oil samples?
  • Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) coupled with chemometric methods was applied to detect the presence of Sudan IV in some edible palm oil samples. We studied the samples within the 1200–1800cm 1 Raman frequency range. In predicting adulteration, we used 1388cm 1 Raman peak that is associated with Sudan IV as our marker.
  • Is Sudan IV a non-adulterated palm oil?
  • Sudan IV is taken as a referential point also and is centered at the origin of the graph. FDA samples 2, 3, and 4 are also in another quadrant than the control point. They can be considered as adulterated. The FDA 1 sample has a response in the same quadrant than the control point, which means it is probably a non-adulterated palm oil.
  • Can you add Sudan dyes to palm oil?
  • The results also point to the fact that the amount of these dyes in palm oil is at levels that need urgent attention. Adding Sudan dyes to edible palm oil is forbidden and the act tantamount to adulteration according to the Public Health Act, 2012, Act 851.
