In the case of oil extraction of sunflower seeds using a CLEXTRAL BC 45 co-rotating twin-screw extruder, the screw configuration and the operating conditions had an important influence on the oil extraction yield, the energy input and the quality of oil extracted (Amalia Kartika et al., 2006).

Moreover, operating conditions have still to be optimized and oil extraction quality and mechanical energy input characterized. This study set out to evaluate the effects of screw configuration and operating parameters such as barrel temperature, screw speed and feed rate on oil extraction from sunflower seeds using a twin-screw extruder.
The study used sunflower seeds with an oil content of 45–47% and moisture of 7–9%. The results showed that increasing the grinding degree and screw rotation speed led to higher oil yield.

A new process, in which sunflower seeds are pressed in a twin-screw extruder, is examined here. The screw profile was first optimized. Oleic sunflower seeds were crushed and 80% of the oil was removed. The resultant oil was of good quality, with acid numbers below 2 mg KOH/g of oil and total phosphorus contents of about 100 ppm.
